Book reviews and extremely short notes and comments have only been recorded since they became relevant in UFC Research Assessment exercises. Earlier short reviews were published in numerous journals and magazines, including New Scientist, Sociology, Current Psychology, New Technology Work & Employment, Times Higher Education Supplement, Futures, Electronics Times, Computer Weekly, Project Appraisal, and the Economic Journal.

Electronic media appearances have generally taken the form of broadcast interviews: these have been featured on Open University programmes, and scientific and educational services of BBC national and local, and overseas radio stations. However, there have been some exceptions. One TV programme (1988) featured reenactments of the interview research used in the unemployment studies of the mid-1980s; and some of the written material from these studies was recorded onto optical disc as part of the Domesday Project. The ESPRIT QLIS project over 1990-92 involved among other things the preparation of text material ('dataware') for a computer decision aid, as well as work in designing this hypermedia system. In 1990 I participated in a roundtable discussion on IT in a radio 4 series "Science Friction", in 1995 I was one member of a roundtable (talking about active badges) in BBC Radio’s "The Afternoon Shift", and was interviewed for several news programmes in 1996.

1992: · I was the keynote speaker for the Advance Western Australia Fair in Perth in May, a large-scale convention attracting some 100,000 members of the public over three days. I presented papers on consumer technology and changing patterns of employment and unemployment there, and participated in a round-table of futurists. I was interviewed on Perth radio, and gave a second presentation of the latter paper to a workshop organised by the Department of Community Services at the Claremont Superdrome. While in Australia I also gave talks at the Commission for the Future and the Union Research Centre on New Office Technologies, both in Melbourne. · I was an invited speaker at NordDATA '92, the annual conference of Nordic IT professionals, held at Tampere (Finland) in June, where I gave one lecture: "Bringing Computer Power to the Consumer Market". Finally, I gave a seminar in October on "A Framework for Services Innovation" as part of PREST's external seminar series, and another in November on "Management and Environmental Policy" for The British Council course 9253 on Science and Technology Policy: key issues and strategies - an international seminar in Manchester. · A major mission was undertaken in September-October 1992, where I was a member of a ten-person expert group called in to provide a plan of action for the social sciences in Switzerland, by the Swiss Science Council. This involved interviewing major players in Swiss social science, and in its user and funding organisations, and preparation of a report - in which I shared responsibility with A Elsinga for drafting the section on policy recommendations, and prepared the final edited version. The main proposals of this action plan were widely debated - and in some cases mplemened, in Switzerland. I was the subject of an interview and profile in the journal 21-C (issue 4), in a series on "The Futurists"; and was invited onto its Editorial Board in 1992. (However, the Australian Commission on the Future, which was responsible for the journal, seems to have become moribund, so no activity has resulted from this appointment.) Also in 1992, Futures has set up an editorial advisory team (of 'consulting editors') in addition to its editorial board, to provide more intensive inputs as to the journal content and direction, and I am on both. I have also been appointed to the scientific council of the French organisation Futuribles in 1992. Numerous and varying committee and subcommittee roles ongoing.
