ABSTRACT
Becta's Computer Games in Education project:
How Can Computer Games Influence New Software for Schools?

Becta is an agency of the Department for Education and Skills, established to examine issues related to the use of ICT in education and to provide advice and expertise to the education sector. As part of this remit, the Computer Games in Education (CGE) project aims to examine how the technologies and design principles exemplified and how changes could be integrated into new software for schools.
This paper will outline the context and progress of Becta's CGE project. Particular focus will be given to a short study, completed as part of the project, which evaluated the immediate effectiveness and ential of using computer games to support teaching and learning.
From evidence provided by the study, aspects of games which could be of benefit to formal education will be discussed. Issues and difficulties highlights will also be presented and key findings including:
